With football and everything else we have going on, Labor day was the only day that we were able to head to the hills to cut trees for firewood. We started out by having lunch (french bread sandwiches, chips, and soda) on the trailer. After lunch dad and the older boys cut the trees and hauled them to the edge of the road where they would roll them down to the trailer and then mom would load them. Zander and McKay had a blast playing in the dirt on the side of the hill and Declan enjoyed his first taste of licorice. Of course one of the boys had to find some creepy, crawly thing--Trey found a snake.
After a while all the boys were ready to be done and go do some fishing. We were all so hot and THIRSTY (we drank all the lemonades and waters that we had packed) that someone who will remain nameless . . . Chase . . .drank out of the creek. After showing him the cow prints in the mud I think he was a bit worried about contracting Giardia--luckily he has shown no signs of it. Dad filtered some water through his shirt for some of us to drink. We cooled ourselves off by walking barefoot in the creek. The water was COLD on our feet, but was so freshing.
A couple fish were caught which was quite exciting considering there haven't been more than a few caught in the 3 years we have lived here. Dark clouds started to roll in so it was time to head out. The boys spent the drive home watching the lightning and the sky get darker and darker. As we stopped for dinner the rain came POURING down....we got out of there just in time. Even though it was a lot of work to cut down and haul the trees we all look forward to spending time together in the mountains. The boys say that it is now a family tradition...complete with our french bread sandwich lunch.
