March 26 through March 30 was spring break for the boys. It was quite the crummy week due to rainy, windy, and cold weather. So most of it was spent inside. Chase took spring break quite literally and broke the 5th metacarpal in his right hand. How? He was out in the desert riding his horse, Ginger, and she wasn't following what he was telling her to do so he punched her face. What would posses him to punch a horse is beyond me, but I don't think he will be doing it again. After hurting it on Saturday we got him in to the doctor on Monday. The doctor, nurse, and x-ray technicians all got a good laugh out of how he hurt his hand. After an x-ray it was confirmed that it was in fact broken so he was put into a splint that kept his ring finger and pinky bent at a funky angle.
After a week and a half of wearing the splint and breaking the part for his fingers off he finally saw the orthopedic surgeon. He had another set of x-rays, but we got good news with those. The doctor said that 1 out of 100 boxer fractures end up like Chase's. In other words, he was lucky and didn't break it bad enough to need surgery. The doctor gave us the option of a splint or a cast (which would have his fingers bent at a 90 degree angle, all the way up to his finger tips). The doctor said that if Chase could be careful then he would recommend the splint. That was the obvious choice for Chase as well. We have a follow up appointment at the end of the month for another x-ray, but the doctor is pretty confident that his hand is going to heal up very well. Although he did say that if he hits anything between now and July with that hand he will do some serious damage. So we dad and I are constantly reminding him to be careful in everything he does.

So glad Chase doesn't need surgery--silly boy! Hope his hand heals quickly and that he doesn't hit anything else anytime soon! ;)
